Beat Takeshi vive la ajetreada, y a veces surrealista, vida de una celebridad del mundo del espectáculo. Shortly after completing Sonatine, director Takeshi Kitano conceived of a film about an ordinary guy who enters an imaginary world inside his own head. Diego y Blanca están casados. Su relación se basa en tener sexo, pelearse y ver la televisión. Blanca atormenta a Diego con sus berrinches y explosiones violentas, siempre causadas por celos y malentendidos. Una noche, Diego recibe una llamada de Karina, su hija adolescente fruto de su relación anterior, se ha escapado de casa y quiere vivir con él...

Diego's job is counting people as they enter a large government building. After work, he and his wife Blanca lie on the couch, watch soap operas, or make love on the kitchen table. Their relationship is based on having sex, watching TV, and fighting, until one day their routine is interrupted. Karina, Diego's daughter from a previous marriage, arrives in search of her father's love, but Blanca refuses to accept her. Diego finds himself caught between an extremely jealous wife and a daughter in desperate need of guidance. An astonishing climax will lead Diego to a total loss of control.

Champagne - Alfred Hitchcock - 1928

Betty es una chica de pueblo que un buen dia discute con su padre, el millonario Gordon Harker, a consecuencia de una historia de amor. A modo de castigo el hombre hace creer a su hija que se encuentra arruinado económicamente, con la intención de obligarla a ganarse la vida por si misma. Así, Betty emprende un solitario viaje que la llevará a Francia. Después de un movido viaje en barco la chica desembarca en París donde la contratan en un cabaret para invitar a los clientes a tomar champán, precisamente la bebida a la que su padre debe toda su fortuna. Al final, el padre de la pobre Betty, que nunca ha perdido de vista a su hija (ya que hizo que un detective la siguiese) comprende que ha llegado demasiado lejos y consiente el matrimonio de su pupila con el hombre que ella quiere.

Betty, rebellious daughter of a millionaire, decides to marry the pennyless Jean, against her father's will. She runs away to France and she starts living a life of luxury on the profits from her father's business. The rich man decides to put a stop to her behavior pretending his business crashed. Betty now has to find money by herself and she gets a job in a night club.

Anna, her older sister Irene (Conchita Perez) and younger sister Juana (Maite Sanchez) are looked after by their emotionally chilly Aunt Paulina (Monica Randall), while housekeeper Rosa (Florinda Chico) provides what little warmth there is to be found in the household. While Ana's mother is gone, the girl frequently sees and hears her mother's spirit, and is convinced Anselmo's emotional neglect and infidelity is responsible for her death, leading the youngster to take her own form of revenge against her father. The title Cria Cuervos is taken from a Spanish proverb -- "Raise ravens and they'll pluck out your eyes." The film was originally released in the United States under title Cria!, and has been screened in English-speaking territories as Raise Ravens and The Secret of Ana.

En un futuro no muy lejano, un misterioso accidente ocurre en los trenes subterráneos de Buenos Aires: un coche que circulaba por sus vías desaparece, perdiéndose en el tiempo por un extraño fenómeno que solo un cientéfico puede resolver. Film futurista de ciencia-ficción realizado íntegramente por alumnos de una escuela de cine argentina, bajo la coordinación del profesor y cineasta Gustavo Mosquera.

Recent stories, fears and oblivion seen through a metaphor. A 30-passenger convoy vanishes in the closed circuit of the Buenos Aires underground system. Research will be initiated towards finding the cause of this dematerialization. A young topologist (surfaces mathematician) leads the investigation based on some lost maps and technical data sheets. He cannot find the whereabouts of the old scientist who designed the intricate weft of the subway web, until the unexpected aid from a young girl will ease the obtention of the first clues. Everyting seems to be futile, but a random event that will risk his life gets him into an impossible train, were he will face up the amazing final revelation.

Roman Polansky - 4 Cortos - 1957/58

At an early age Roman Polanski began to realize his true ambition to be a filmmaker with a series of short films which were made during his time as a student at Poland's prestigious National Film School at Lodz. His debut film The Crime [1957] - a three minute short without dialogue about a senseless murder - and the one that followed it, the three-minute A Toothful Smile [1957], about a peeping tom, were atmospheric studies in violence and voyeurism that disturbed his fellow filmmakers and raised speculations about the young filmmaker's dark side.

Los ocho cortometrajes que Polanski realizó antes de lanzarse a la aventura de Cuchillo bajo el agua permiten adentrarnos a sus temas recurrentes [la violencia, el voyeurismo, el humor absurdo, la tensión sexual] y a sus primeras experimentaciones técnicas [con curradas fotografías b/n, una tímida progresión en la narrativa no-lineal y bandas sonoras carentes de diálogo.] “Es en realidad un estilo determinado lo que me atrae, más que un tema” ha escrito en su Autobiografía. Pues en estas piezas ha quedado más que demostrado.

El más conocido de los cortos, fue también el primero en ser estrenado públicamente. Obtuvo cinco premios internacionales y despertó la atención de la crítica. Polanski explora la comedia absurda, creando hermosísimas imágenes y situaciones surrealistas, donde la inocencia se ve constantemente acosada por la crueldad y la perversión del mundo.

El primer cortometraje que Polanski realiza a los 24 años en la Escuela Estatal de Cine de Lodz, Polonia. Es un simple ejercicio de escena única en la semi-oscuridad, narrado con tal osadía que resulta sorprendente.

Youths get ready for a party, decorating the dance floor, cleaning out the fountain of a pond. That evening...

Polanski ingresa en la dimensión del sonoro y el montaje narrativo. Su cámara se transforma en espía-documental y narra la historia de un grupo de gamberros que irrumpen en una fiesta para acabar con todo. El efecto es inquietante, ya que resulta un híbrido del “cinema vérité” con claras orquestaciones del director.

Otro ejercicio mudo de unidad espaciotemporal, donde afloran los primeros rasgos de humor ácido. Según escribió en su Autobriografía, la idea fue en realidad sugerido por su profesor. Lo cierto es que el voyeurismo será un tema recurrente en su obra, generalmente con las mismas consecuencias.

Dos mujeres mueren en un accidente de tráfico y la conductora que iba con ellas pierde una pierna. Los maridos de las víctimas, dos zoólogos gemelos se sienten fascinados por el proceso de descomposición de los cuerpos. Después inician un idilio con la conductora amputada y comienzan a liberar animales del zoológico en el que trabajan.

Oliver Deuce, a successful doctor, is shattered when his wife is killed in a freak car accident involving the car being driven by Alba Bewick colliding with a very large rare bird. His twin brother Oswald is researching how carcasses decay at the local zoo. Alba survives the accident although she loses one leg, and her sinister physician eventually removes the other 'because it looked so sad all alone'. Oswald and Oliver become involved in a menage a trois with Alba, and uncover very dubious trafficking in zoo property. But ultimately their only goal is to try and understand their mortal condition.

20.000 leguas de viaje submarino - Richard Fleischer - 1954

El prestigioso biólogo marino Pierre Aronnax es invitado por el gobierno de los Estados Unidos a unirse a un buque de guerra en una expedición exploratoria con el fin de encontrar a un monstruo marino que destroza a acorazados y navíos mercantes en aguas del Pacífico. Luego de varios meses de esfuerzos en vano, el USS Abraham Lincoln presencia el hundimiento de un barco cerca de su ruta y, al ir a su encuentro, descubre al monstruo con el cual traba combate. Pero el buque es hundido y Aronnax, su ayudante, y el experimentado arponero Ned Land flotan a la deriva en el océano.

Cuando la suerte parece estar echada, descubren al cuerpo del monstruo, que resulta ser un buque submarino fuertemente acorazado llamado Nautilus y está al mando del Capitán Nemo, quien decide retenerlos. Nemo es un brillante inventor y estratega, que se ha planteado a sí mismo y a su tripulación la misión de destruir todo barco de guerra y buque que transporte materiales militares que encuentren en su camino. Pero con el paso del tiempo, Aronnax descubrirá el oscuro pasado de Nemo y que detrás de su deseo de justicia se esconde una insaciable sed de venganza.

Alexandra's Project-2003-Rolf de Heer

Steve está casado con Alexandra y tienen dos hijos, Em-ma y Sam. El día de su cumpleaños, Steve sale del trabajo deseando llegar a casa para ver la fiesta que su familia le ha preparado. Pero cuando llega le sorprende una extra-ña tranquilidad. Busca a su mujer y a sus hijos, pero no están. Lo que encuentra es una cinta de vídeo en la que se puede leer un aviso para que la vea. En ella aparecen sus hijos que le felicitan su cumpleaños, pero en cuanto éstos dejan de verse sale su mujer y una pistola apuntándole a la cabeza. Steve, sorprendido, intenta razonar y pensar en algo para ayudarlos, pero por ahora no puede hacer nada más que seguir mirando la cinta hasta el final...

Returning home from work with news of a promotion, a husband (Gary Sweet as Steve) expects a "surprise" birthday party only to find his home deserted with a videotape to watch that initially wishes him a happy birthday and notes that the two children have been sent to a relative's house for the night. The wife (Helen Buday as Alexandra) then engages in a taped strip tease that initially amuses Steve, but soon horrifies him.

This surrealistic world is a meatless and cannibalistic one, and 'real' food is a highly expensive commodity that is used as currency for grain. The local inhabitants of the town in which Louison visits all have a 'secret' agreement in which the Butcher supplies them with meat in exchange for their resisting of cannibal urges towards one another. However, unbeknownst to Louison, this agreement involves the Butcher supplying his very own-hired Handyman as food!

Yesterday es una joven mujer, casada y con una hija, que vive en Rooihoek, una remota aldea en el territorio zulú en Sudáfrica. Su marido trabaja en una mina de oro en Johannesburgo y la visita una vez cada dos meses. Yesterday, de espíritu alegre y muy trabajadora, se dedica a cultivar la tierra y cuida de su hijita que pronto empezará la escuela, a la que ella nunca tuvo oportunidad de ir. Su vida se convertirá en una odisea cuando descubra, tras repetidas y frustadas visitas a dos horas de pie, al pueblo más cercano donde hay una clínica, que ella es HIV positivo.

Young mother Yesterday (Leleti Khumalo) lives in Rooihoek, a remote village with meagre resources, with her daughter Beauty (Lihle Mvelase), while her husband (Kenneth Khambula) is away working in Johannesburg's mines. Falling ill, she struggles to see a doctor, never guaranteed a consultation after walking the long distance to the medical centre, which is only open one day a week and always oversubscribed. When she finally gets an appointment, she is diagnosed as HIV positive. Devastated, she goes to visit her husband who refuses to accept the situation, and Yesterday is left to fend for herself, desperately hoping she will survive long enough to see Beauty go to school. Yesterday claims she was named so by her father because 'things were better yesterday'. A bold statement given South Africa's painful history, but given how the AIDS epidemic has affected the region, it is sadly clear to see how some can come to that conclusion. Set against the stunning, harsh landscapes of South Afica's Zululand, director Darrell Roodt (Sarafina!, Cry the Beloved Country) insists his film is not a message movie, but a timely depiction of how devastating the disease is for the individual.
